MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

IDC is offering MRI studies first time in Pakistan with latest and high end magnets from Philips and GE, capable of performing angiographic, cardio vascular and other advance procedures. IDC is also excelling in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the structures within and around the heart. Cardiac MRI is used to detect or monitor cardiac disease and to evaluate the heart’s anatomy and function in patients with both heart disease present at birth and heart diseases that develop after birth.

MRI creates detailed images, allowing physicians to view inside of the human body with precision. MRI has no side effects because it uses magnetic signals (not radiation) to see through the body. Images produced by MRI technology are used more and more in early diagnosis of a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Various heart diseases with Cardiac MRI
  • Central nervous system diseases (Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar MRI)
  • Orthopedic injuries and disorders (MRI of Joints and Extremities)
  • Strokes
  • Cancer
  • Screenings prior to biopsies
  • Gynecological conditions
  • Arterial stenosis & arterial diseases
  • Abdominal diseases with MRI abdomen.
  • MRI TMJ
  • Breast Cancer with Breast MRI
  • Renal MRA
  • MRCP (Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography)
  • MRA (Magnetic resonance angiography)

MRI studies allow physicians to analyze and confirm medical conditions. As a result, doctors have access to more accurate information when determining the most appropriate treatment.

What happens during scanning?
During an MRI scan, flat bed gradually moves into the scanner and scanner captures body images so it is advised not to move during procedure. Scan time varies between 15 and 50 minutes, depending on the size of the area being scanned.

Safety & preparation before an MRI scan:
MRI scans are painless and very safe. Usually no preparation is required. MRI uses magnetic field so people with metallic medical implants are not advised to undergo this test.

Patients with following devices may tell the doctor before procedure.

  • Cochlear (ear) implant.
  • Internal (implanted) pacemaker.
  • Surgical clips such as those used on brain aneurysms.
  • Artificial heart valves.
  • Implanted electronic device, including a cardiac pacemaker.
  • Artificial limbs or metallic joints.
  • Implanted nerve stimulators.
  • Pins, screws, plates, stents or surgical staples.

In case if you are not sure, you may undergo an X-ray before an MRI scan, to make sure you are safe to enter the scanner.
