DEXA SCAN AT IDC:

The DEXA scan is a non-invasive and painless test that only takes about 15 -20 minutes to complete. During the scan, you will be asked to lie down while the scanner takes images of your spine, hip, or forearm.

What is DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan is a test that assesses the density of your bones to determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more prone to fractures. The scan can also identify other bone conditions, including osteopenia (low bone density), brittle bone disease, and osteomalacia (softening of the bones).

  • DEXA scans use low levels of X-ray beams to produce detailed images of your bones.
  • The scans are quick, safe and painless.

You may need a DEXA scan if you have (or have had) any of the following:

Osteoporosis, or a family history of Osteoporosis.

  • A fracture after a minor fall or injury Early menopause or early hysterectomy.
  • A family history of fractures Low body mass index (BMI) < 21.
  • Suffer from an eating disorder.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions (irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease).
  • Are on medication which may increase the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

During a DEXA scan, you will lie on your back flat and remain still while a scanning arm moves over your body, emitting a low-dose X-ray to measure bone density. No tunnel or injection is necessary. It is important to remain still during the scan to ensure clear images.

A DEXA scan measures the density of your bones and can help find out if you are at a higher risk of osteoporosis. The scan can also detect other potential bone disorders and conditions, such as osteopenia, brittle bone disease, and osteomalacia. It is helpful tells about fat muscle distribution in your body normally called as Whole-Body Composition.

The scan usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. You’ll be able to go home after you have had it done.
