The histopathology lab is manned by skilled medical technologists working under close supervision of our consultant Histopathologists and lab managers to ensure accuracy, quality and promptness of histopathology reports.

Facilities and Services at Histopathology Laboratory

Surgical Pathology: Surgical specimens such as mucosal endoscopic biopsies, CT scan and ultrasound guided liver, renal, splenic and other soft tissue needle core biopsies, skin biopsies, endometrial curettings, incisional and excisional tumor biopsies etc. are received from all over Pakistan. We also deal with large surgical specimens such as hysterectomy, mastectomy, colectomy, thyroidectomy, prostatectomy and amputation specimens, etc. After acquiring representative sections in a well-equipped grossing room, further processing is carried out in a state of the art histopathology lab equipped with latest automated tissue processors, strainers, microtomes, etc. by our highly skilled & qualified technologists. All the cases are promptly reported by the Histopathologists. Intradepartmental consultations are routinely made for all the malignant tumor cases and other important conditions to ensure quality reporting as per international standards.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC):  FNAC is a highly informative, minimally invasive diagnostic procedure with 95-98 percent sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing malignant and benign tumors as well as infective and inflammatory conditions. FNAC of enlarged lymph nodes, breast lumps, thyroid swellings and any other soft tissue swellings/lumps in body is carried out by highly trained cytopatholgists. Female patients can conveniently get this procedure done by our female consultants. FNAC is carried out under aseptic measures in a well-equipped procedure room. The test is immediately checked for adequacy to avoid repeat visits. Final reporting is done on a standardized protocol within 48-72 hours.

Along with routine FNAC an ultrasound guided FNA is also available here at IDC.

Cytopathology: All gynecological and non-gynecological cytology such as cervical smears, vault smears, pleural fluid, ascitic fluid, sputum sample, urine cytology, CSF cytology, synovial fluid cytology etc. is carried out at IDC. Specialized stains are performed where needed for the confirmation of diagnosis.

Special Tests: Specialized test for the detection of fungal infection and confirmation of tuberculosis are also available at IDC. Special arrangements are also made for the tumorous and lymphoproliferative conditions requiring immuno-histochemistry/molecular testing for their categorization and phenotyping.

Immunohistochemisty:

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the most important part  of Histopathology department. It involves the process of selectively identifying antigens in cells of a tissue section by exploiting the principle of antibodies binding specifically to antigens in a tissue. More than 60 IHC antibodies are available on state of the art automatic analyzer.
