Hematology & Cytogenetics

The study of blood, blood forming organs and different blood diseases are carried out by Hematology Department of Islamabad Diagnostic Centre having competent Hematologists with tremendous experience in the field of hematology. They are supported by experienced, dedicated and well educated technologists who are graduates and post graduates in the field of Medical Lab Technology. These Technologists are working under close supervision of Consultant Pathologists and Lab Managers to ensure quality, accuracy and promptness.  Our hematologists are supervising all routine and specialized tests.

The department has advanced automated analyzers with a very stringent internal quality control system. Besides this internal quality control system, there is regular participation in the EQA Program of College of American Pathologists (CAP Proficiency Testing) for Blood Coagulation studies and EQAS (External Quality Assurance Services, BIORAD,USA) for Blood CP. Hematology department caters for the following tests:

Routine Hematology:
Routine Hematology includes Blood complete picture (CP/CBC), peripheral smear, ESR, ICT MP, Peripheral smear test for Malaria parasite, Coombs’ Test, G6PD Enzyme Assay, Body Fluids Analysis, Urine for Hemosiderin etc. All abnormal results are verified by senior Hematologists and strict watch is kept on the quality of the results along with its clinical correlation. Wherever felt necessary, test results are rechecked free of cost and if required on different instruments.

Specialized Tests:
Some of the specialized tests performed at IDC for hematological evaluation of patients are:

Hemoglobin Electrophoresis:
Hemoglobin Disorders and Thalassemia  is diagnosed by Hemoglobin electrophoresis performed on fully automated, state of the art Capillary zone electrophoresis system.

Protein Electrophoresis is also available on fully automated Capillary zone electrophoresis system. The protein electrophoresis test is often used to find abnormal substances called M proteins; however, it can also be used for other proteins and antibodies (immunoglobulins).

Bone Marrow Biopsies:
Bone Marrow Aspiration and Trephine biopsies are routinely performed and as 1 or 2 hematologists are present throughout the day at main lab, however, an appointment for Bone Marrow Biopsy, prior to visit is preferred. Special stains are done wherever required. Cytogenetic studies for CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) and other hematological disorders like Fanconi’s anemia etc. are also done on bone marrow aspirate or peripheral films as requested by treating physician. These marrows are further discussed among senior hematologists before final report is issued. The results are efficiently communicated to the patients and if required to their treating physicians as well. Patients are free to discuss their reports with our consultant pathologists and are facilitated for review of reports.

Automated Coagulation Studies and tests for Thrombophilia: Study of coagulation system is the most sensitive part of diagnostic hematology as abnormal results have a marked clinical significance. IDC has a very efficient automated system of coagulation studies. All the samples undergo rechecking and for every abnormal result history is taken from the patient for clinical correlation before the issuance of report. Apart from basic coagulation tests like PT (INR), APTT, FDPs and Fibrinogen, we also perform tests for evaluation of thrombophilia which include Anti-Thrombin III , Protein C and S estimation , Lupus anticoagulant and antiphospholipid antibodies.

Platelet Aggregation Studies:
Platelet aggregation studies are done for the patients on antiplatelet drugs like Aspirin and Clopidogrel to see the effect of drug. The test is performed on the Biola platelet aggregation analyzer.

Cytogenetic Studies:
Cytogenetic studies  involves testing samples of blood or bone marrow in a laboratory to look for changes in chromosomes, including broken, missing, rearranged, or extra chromosomes. Changes in certain chromosomes may be a sign of a genetic disease or condition or some types of cancer. Besides hematological disorders as already mentioned, some of the other conditions for which cytogenetic studies are available at IDC are:

  • Dysmorphic Features
  • Congenital Anomalies
  • Mental Retardation
  • Short Stature
  • Gender Ambiguity
  • Primary Amenorrhea
  • Secondary Amenorrhea
  • Recurrent Abortions
  • Infertility
