What is ApoB?

ApoB is a protein in the blood found on particles that deposit cholesterol in the artery wall.

ApoB measures the actual number of bad cholesterol particles floating in your blood, whereas standard LDL cholesterol measures the amount of cholesterol carried by LDL particles.

LDL-Cholesterol

tells us how much cholesterol is being carried (the cargo).

LDL-C measures the amount of cholesterol.
ApoB counts the harmful particles.

Why is ApoB Important?

ApoB reflects the number of harmful cholesterol-carrying particles linked to cardiovascular (heart) risk. Even a person with normal cholesterol can be at higher risk if ApoB is high.

Who should consider an ApoB test?

Especially people with:
  • ✓ Diabetes.
  • ✓ Persistently raised lipid levels.
  • ✓ Obesity or metabolic syndrome.
  • ✓ A personal or family history of early heart disease (previous heart attack, stent, etc.).
  • ✓ Apparently normal cholesterol levels but ongoing heart risk.
